Matt Briggs is an Australian photographer who specialises in photographing people and product across the genres of fashion, beauty, portraiture and lifestyle.
Matt’s interest in photography developed as a teenager growing up on Australia’s east-coast. As a keen surfer, he observed light from sunrise to sunset, fascinated with its changing colour and contrast throughout a day and between seasons. Matt began photographing the people and places he was observing, printing and submitting to magazines that defined surfing, skating and music culture during the 1990s. Matt’s observational style developed as he became skilled at pre-empting scenarios, framing subjects and their environment in ways that told a more complete visual story.
Matt’s love for the printed image turned to the glossy pages of beauty and fashion magazines. His photography evolved into the studio as he connected with like-minded stylists, models, hair and makeup artists to create visual stories for magazines and personal projects. Matt’s fashion and beauty imagery has developed into a fusion of his clean studio sensibility with an elegant rebellious twist aimed at disrupting the status quo. His “opinion” speaks loudest through his creation of a narrative that is fuelled by the desire to direct unique, spontaneous and authentic performances from his subjects when developing their character.
Matt has been photographing professionally for the last 15 years and is currently based in Sydney where he divides his time between commercial campaigns and editorial contributions to cool magazines such as Schon, Solstice, Factice, FGUK, Elléments, Fen Hong Sé, Laud, Stell.
